Altamaha Federal Credit Union

The Altamaha Federal Credit Union was chartered by NCUA in May of 1955 (named Rayonier Employees Federal Credit Union) to serve employees of Rayonier, a pulp mill located in Jesup, GA. The office was on the mill premises until 1984 when it was moved to a leased space in downtown Jesup. The charter was expanded at that time to take in Select Employee Groups. Products such as share drafts, certificates of deposit and home equity loans were added to the regular share and loan accounts.

A building was built and occupied in August 1987, at which time the assets quickly grew. The credit union name was changed to Altamaha Federal Credit Union in February 1994. The Altamaha River flows through our area, and this name was chosen to more adequately describe our field of membership. Due to the fact that we were serving more and more Employee Groups, we applied for and were granted a community charter in April 1999. This includes anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Wayne County, of which Jesup is the county seat.

In 2005 Altamaha Federal Credit Union had the opportunity to purchase a bank building in Screven that was previously a Suntrust Bank. Our doors opened in December 2005 as a full service financial institution in Screven, which is located in Wayne County.

Many of our members employed at Rayonier live in Long County, so it was an obvious move to expand to our field of membership to Long County. NCUA granted the expansion and a store-front branch was opened in December 2005 and in 2010 a large new facility was built that included a much-anticipated drive-thru. The field of membership now includes anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Wayne County or Long County.

Altamaha Federal Credit Union is a $55 million community charter credit union that has served its members for 60 years and continues to add new products and services. AFCU is a federally insured financial cooperative that services over 9000 member owners and is safe and sound with federal insurance coverage of $250,000.00 (NCUA). Credit union staff and Board Members are active in the community, providing positive exposure and status with area residents and civic and government leadership.
